At the latest, since the attack on the synagogue in Halle an der Saale on October 9, 2019, the existence of murderous anti-Semitism has returned to the agenda of daily politics. Sebastian Jung traveled to Magdeburg to observe Stephan B.’s trial and made sketches of the courtroom proceedings. As in his artistic observations of the NSU trial (2017), his sketches capture the players in the courtroom. What can we learn from the treatment of these acts in German society by looking at these pictures? How do we, as observers, view this criminal, his eyes darting this way and that?
For the exhibition titled Tell Me about Yesterday Tomorrow at the Munich Documentation Center for the History of National Socialism, Jung already made drawings relating to the perpetrator’s video, depriving him of his propaganda material and enabling new views of this document through alienation. In the same context, he created a relief on the NSU trial, which is on display at the Higher Regional Court to this day.
